The city of Madrid is a major international touristic destination with over 6.5 million visits per year, and offering more than 44.000 hotel rooms. Even though the dates of the meeting have been chosen to avoid local festivities and other special events, you are strongly advised to book your accomodation as soon as possible to guarantee the cheapest possible rates. Besides regular hotels, and bed and breakfast, Airbnb is becoming a very attractive choice, since it offers plenty of options (and probably way cheaper) in the whole Madrid area.
Another workable (and typically much cheaper than regular hotels) option is to seek for "Colegios Mayores" (many of them located in the neighbourhood of the university), housing typically for students and also short-term visitors, given the fact that by the Conference's dates most students will be off Madrid in their local towns, thus freeing quite a lot of housing space of this type. You can check the list of Colegios Mayores here and make your application form there if such is your choice.
When making your choice of accomodation, please bear in mind the proximity to a subway station .For a convenient transportation from Madrid downtown to the University Campus, we suggest anywhere with a convenient access to subway line 6 (grey colour), since it is the one that gets you to "Ciudad Universitaria" station, and from there it is a pleasent 10-minutes walk to the Faculty of Sciences. A convenient option might be those hotels located in the Moncloa/Arguelles area, since it optimizes the combination of subway/bus/walk options to the venue, while being relatively close to downtown and most places of touristic (and fun) interest.
